Frequently Asked Questions
Lanacane Anti-Itch Cream and Lanacane® Anti-Bacterial First Aid Spray
- What is an itch anyway?
- Scientists believe that itching is actually a form of pain transmitted by nerve fibers called cutaneous sensory neurons that are similar to those nerves that transmit pain. Therefore, the same stimulus that causes pain can cause an itch -- if it is experienced in a milder form. Anyone who has ever itched (and everyone has) knows that it feels like a tickle, but it can be quite an unpleasant and annoying tickle, if it persists. Itching can also be "in your head". Sometimes just the thought of the word "itch" or the sight of someone else scratching can actually make a person itch. Itching may also be a nervous habit in some people.
- What's wrong with scratching an itch?
- Scratching an itch may lead to more itching and more scratching and possibly, an infection. People who experience itching, whether from dry weather, poison ivy or insect bites, should apply over-the-counter (OTC) topical remedies such as Lanacane® that effectively treat the particular type of itch they have. If these remedies don't work, or if the itching lasts for more than a week, or becomes quite severe, it is best to contact a physician. Intense, severe itching can be the symptom of a more serious ailment, such as kidney disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism or AIDS.
- Does scratching an itch really feel good?
- Scratching an itch provides only temporary relief, and, unfortunately, only leads to more itching. This is called the "itch-scratch-itch cycle", which only makes matters worse. Some scientists believe that scratching actually helps the body release pain-relieving endorphins, but this has not been proven and scratching only provides temporary relief. Scratching may indeed scrape off a layer of skin, but this does not make the itch disappear and losing layers of skin can lead to an infection.
- What is the itch-scratch-itch cycle?
- Scratching an itch provides temporary relief, and, unfortunately leads to more itching. This is called the "itch-scratch-itch cycle" and is most definitely real, according to the itch experts. Since scratching only leads to more itching and potentially more serious secondary infections, breaking the itch-scratch-itch cycle is probably the most effective way to eliminate the problem.
- Are all itches basically the same? And is there one ideal treatment?
- Itches are all different. The cause of the itch is important in determining treatment. For example, surface itching can be calmed by applying a topical anesthetic, such as benzocaine, which is found in products such as Lanacane® Anti-Itch Cream. This will help numb the itch immediately, allowing the skin to heal by eliminating the need to scratch.
- If I scratch poison ivy will it spread?
- Unless the resin from the poison ivy plant (Urushiol) is still present on the skin, scratching the infected area will not spread it. The fluid inside the blisters that develop during an outbreak of poison ivy does not contain allergens. As long as the skin is washed in warm water and soap for about 20 minutes, there should be no resin left on the skin. Scratching is not recommended, though, because it can pop blisters, leaving the skin open to secondary infections.
- Is the summertime itchier than the winter?
- Although people in warm climates experience more bug bites and bee stings, fall and winter weather can result in dry skin that cracks and itches. The skin can lose its moisture and become red, scaly, irritated and itchy due to the low humidity outdoors and the dry air of heated homes. Moisturizing the skin regularly and applying a topical itch remedy can calm the itch.
- If I've never had poison ivy, am I immune?
- If you haven't had poison ivy by the time you are an adult, it is pure luck, not immunity. You may have even come in contact with the resin of the plant once, but the first-time contact only sensitizes you to the plant, rather than causing an outbreak. The next time you come in contact with the plant will prove just how immune or sensitive you are. Keep in mind, 90 percent of the U.S. population is sensitive to plants like poison ivy.
- What's the best way to treat an insect bite? With ice?
- Applying an ice pack will help reduce any swelling, and in turn, may reduce the itch temporarily. A topical anesthetic such as Lanacane® can help stop the itch longer term. Remember, don't scratch -- it only leads to more itching and can end up in an infection.
- What causes athlete's foot itching?
- Athlete's foot, the itchy, cracked skin usually found between the toes, is caused by mold-like fungi called dermatophytes, which grows in warm, damp, enclosed spaces. Athletic shoes and sweaty socks provide an ideal environment for this type of fungal growth. This fungus can be picked up in places such as the floor of the gym shower or from sharing towels. Susceptibility to this infection is increased by poor hygiene, continually moist skin and minor skin injuries. Use an antifungal treatment to treat athlete's foot or prevent athlete's foot by using Odor-Eaters® Foot & Sneaker Spray.
- Which topical medication provides the fastest relief?
- Topical anesthetics, such as benzocaine, provide almost instant relief to help stop the itch because they act on the itch nerves themselves. While hydrocortisone does provide relief from itching and swelling, it does not come quickly enough for many people. Diphenhydramine (the main ingredient in antihistamines) works best only when taken orally before the itching or allergic reaction begins.

Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel
- What is chafing?
- Chafing (pronounced Cheyf-ing) is the term given for skin that has been irritated by the repeated rubbing motion of skin on skin, or by clothing, and garb such as belts, bras, and equipment holsters. Chafed skin may be red, sore and/or irritated.
- What is the cause of chafing?
-
Chafing is caused by skin rubbing on skin or clothing rubbing on skin. When skin repeatedly rubs against skin or clothing, e.g. between thighs, against waistbands or seams in clothing, it causes friction which can lead to chafing.
Chafing can occur while playing sports or any activity — but it can also occur doing everyday tasks or in the heat.
- Why do I suffer from chafing?
- Warmer temperatures, humid days, damp weather, tight or poor fitting clothes can increase the likelihood than an activity will cause chafing. You can get chafing from sports, exercise, work or general day-to-day activity like walking around the mall.
- What are the symptoms of chafing?
- Chafing is characterized by a sore, irritated patch of skin that is sensitive to the touch. Other symptoms may include redness, dryness and itching. Chafing can become painful if you don't do anything about it. If left alone, your skin can get really sore and irritated.
- What can I do to prevent chafing?
- Preventing chafing in the first place is the best solution because once chafing occurs it can become problematic. Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel is specifically designed to prevent and soothe chafing.
- How does Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel work?
- Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel works by forming a silky "surface" on your skin that prevents repeated rubbing of skin on skin or on clothing from irritating skin. It dries to a non-greasy finish on the skin, is non-staining and is gentle enough to use anywhere on the body, everyday.
- How is Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel different to other products use for chafing on the market?
- Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel has a unique anti-friction formula which dries clear on contact, is non-greasy and provides skin with long-lasting relief. Other products on the market either leave your skin feeling greasy (e.g.: petroleum jelly) or may stain your clothes (e.g.: powders).
- What are the ingredients in Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel?
- Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel is made with the following ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch.
- How do I apply Lanacane ™Anti-Chafing Gel to my skin?
- Simply smooth a small amount of Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel onto the skin where chafing is likely to occur or has already occurred. The gel dries quickly to a clear, non-greasy finish and leaves your skin feeling ultra soft and smooth. In addition to preventing chafing, the gel will also calm and soothe.
- How much Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel should I apply each time?
- A small amount of Lanacane™ Anti-Chafing Gel goes a long way. Apply a small dab (size of a pea) to the chafed area and gently smooth it on. The product can be re-applied as needed. To avoid future chafing, use prior to activity.
- Where does body chafing occur most often?
- The most common areas for chafing are between the thighs, under the arms, around the waistband, under the breast/chest, elbows, heel, and around the neck.
